SHELBY — The secret is out — Whitney Houston is scheduled to attend this year’s Teen Summit.

Whitney’s sister-in-law and vice president for WhitNip Inc., Pat Houston, confirmed Tuesday that Whitney will be in Shelby this year.

“She has always wanted to come, but in the past her schedule has prevented her from coming,” Pat Houston said by phone from Detroit, where Whitney Houston is in pre-production for her upcoming movie, “Sparkle.”

“Shooting starts next week,” Pat Houston said. “We are going to take a break and come to Shelby. We are 100 percent sure she is coming.” :dancing:

Although Whitney Houston plans to attend the summit, Pat Houston doesn’t want people to miss the point.

“Mentoring is in a state of emergency,” Pat Houston explained in an email. “Our communities across the nation are looking for solutions to make a change. We are that solution. I need you to help me to help others help themselves. We are just doing what we do best, and that’s serving you.”

Other celebrities who will perform and speak to youth at this year’s summit are Quinton Aaron from “The Blind Side,” gospel artist Kim Burrell, the Rev. Yolanda E. Thompson, author/inspirational speaker Gerard Henry, Dr. Shirley Shields, DeVon Franklin and others.

As the Teen Summit celebrates its fifth year, the anniversary represents a new chapter for Pat Houston.
“For the past four years, we have been raising awareness,” Pat Houston said. “Now we are going into phase two — raising money for the academy.”

The academy will be a place where youth from all over the country can come and receive support to “rebuild, restore and repair” and face life’s challenges, Pat Houston said.

The milestone is one of the reasons Whitney Houston wanted to attend this year. The other reason is the new line of candles Pat Houston is launching to help raise funds for the academy — “Marion P.: Fragrances from the Holy Land.”
“The candles are handmade in California, but will be shipped from Shelby. We’re hoping to manufacture in Shelby someday,” Pat Houston said.

Whitney Houston’s endorsement is printed in gold letters on the boxes for the fragrant candles.

“Marion is my name, and Whitney is the only one who calls me Marion P.,” Pat Houston said. “The candles are 100 percent soy and when you burn the candle, it turns into oil that you can dip your hands into and nourish the skin.”

Whitney Houston visits Shelby: Singer in town for Teen Summit

SHELBY — She walked into the store from the back entrance wearing a crisp white button-up shirt and dark jeans tucked into knee-high boots.

An entrance as simple and understated as her clothes.

Her famous voice silent, she walked toward the crowd of people gathered inside the Celebrity Consignment Boutique in Shelby and her face lit up with a megawatt style.

Whitney Houston met privately with fans and family members Friday at the boutique on West Warren Street in anticipation of the fifth annual Teen Summit, scheduled to be held today. Houston’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, is the founder of the Teen Summit and vice president for WhitNip Inc.

Grace Setzer of Gastonia and sisters Elizabeth and Gladys Garner, both of Kings Mountain, came to the reception Friday for the chance to see a performer they love and admire.

“I like all the songs from ‘The Bodyguard,’” Setzer said.

The women shop at the Celebrity Consignment Boutique often, they said, and planned on attending the Teen Summit today.

Inside, the boutique had all the makings of a Hollywood VIP room. Soft jazz music filtered through the speakers as more than a dozen votive candles flickered on display tables. Glass champagne flutes and hors d'oeuvres waited for guests to enjoy.

Whitney Houston walked with her sister-in-law around the consignment boutique, where some of her own clothes have sold to customers. Houston talked and laughed good-naturedly with guests, smiling for photos and handshakes. 

Meeting Whitney Houston wasn’t the only opportunity for a brush with fame. Before the Grammy Award-winning singer arrived, guests met with an actor from the Academy Award-winning movie “The Blind Side.”

Quinton Aaron, whose size on the big screen isn’t diminished in real life, towered over guests at the reception. He played professional football player Michael Oher alongside actors Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw.

Aaron was dressed casually Friday in a gray sweater and blue jeans. The soft-spoken actor told The Star this was his first time in Shelby and he was looking forward to the Teen Summit. He said he’s currently working on a project in which he will play the starring role as well as be the producer.

Some of the other celebrities scheduled to perform and speak to youth at this year’s summit are gospel artist Kim Burrell, the Rev. Yolanda E. Thompson, author and inspirational speaker Gerard Henry, Dr. Shirley Shields and DeVon Franklin, among others.

Dottie Vincent of Shelby was one of the guests at Friday’s VIP reception. She nodded and smiled politely and Whitney Houston and Aaron. She couldn’t help to browse the designer clothes, either. It’s one of her favorite stores in Shelby.

“This is my first tourist destination here in Cleveland County,” Vincent said. “They might not see any of the things anywhere else.”

On how proud she is of sister-in-law Pat Houston for the wonderful work she is doing for the teens:

“My brother was smart for choosing her. I know her as a woman of God, a mother, sister, a wife.” Whitney also went on to explain how she had an instant connection with Pat and expressed how much she loves her and supports her in all of her endeavors.

On how to encourage the youth if they go astray:

“I believe that young people will make mistakes and when they do, don’t turn them away. We don’t want them to go to others because you don’t know what they might get from someone else.”

On proactively parenting:

“Keep an open eye. Let them know they can always come home. Keeping telling them about the dangers. Love can cover a multitude of sins.”

When asked about those who may not have anyone to look up to:

“The FATHER I know didn’t leave me and will send you a mentor.”

She also went on to say that you are never too old to have a mentor and that if you need one, God will send one in your direction. She also elaborated that Kim Burrell was a God sent mentor to her.

I told Ms. Houston how I see certain traits in Bobbi Kris that I see in her including her zest for life, no nonsense attitude and spiritual nature. She smiled in agreement and insists that she made sure to instill in her daughter “compassion, church, faith and hope.”

Ms. Houston also discussed adopting a son, Nicholas over 5 years ago and the struggles of single parenthood. She also stressed the importance of parents being parents to their kids and not just their friend. She believes that you must set firm boundaries and enforce them.

That was all the time that we had. It was short and sweet, but I do not think this is the last I have seen of Ms. Houston. We will meet again. What a privilege to have met and interviewed someone I hold in such high regard. One of the crowning achievements in my life.

Interview wrap up and overall thoughts of Whitney Houston:

I have to say that Ms. Houston was so very gracious, polite, humble and down to earth. She didn’t need for a big fuss to be made about her. Her demeanor was quiet and unassuming, but her presence is strongly felt. She is very beautiful and her spirit is uplifting to be around. Anyone who is a fan of Whitney Houston knows that she is not a fan of interviews, but for her to say to me “I don’t want to disappoint you,” while figuring put another way for the interview instead of rejecting it all together was very thoughtful.

– Other Whitney tidbits–

  • I told her that her fans love her and are really loyal and pray for her. I also told her to never feel like people don’t care, she then look at me and smiled and said “Oh, I don’t feel that way at all, I know.”
  • She is doing Sparkle. She left the set in Detroit to come and had to return later that day.

Whitney Houston Launches Charity Candles

Whitney Houston has launched a new line of candles, and a portion of the proceeds go to charity.

Currently in production on SPARKLE, Whitney spent the last few months working with her manager and sister-in-law, Patricia Houston, inspiring her to develop a scented candle line. The candle line, called MARION P (which is the nickname Whitney has for her sister-in-law) consists of 5 scents inspired by a trip to Israel they took several years ago. This dual candle infuses the air and nourishes the skin. It’s actually a 100 Kosher Soy Candle that melts into Shea Butter that you can moisturize into your skin.

“I’m delighted to be a partner with Pat Houston and the creation of her beautiful candle line,” said Whitney. “It’s the essence of everything pure. It’s not just a candle, it’s an experience. I have never endorsed anything before this. These candles are truly inspiring – they are 100% soy and also made with shea butter so that when the candle melts down, you can use it as a body moisturizer. Also, you are doing a good deed as a portion of the sales goes to Patricia’s teen mentoring program.”

A portion of the proceeds will go to Teen Summit. In 2007, Patricia started Teen Summit through The Patricia Houston Foundation, an organization to “Rebuild, Restore and Repair” the lives of young adults. Teen Summit receives a portion of the profits from Celebrity Consignment and every October, Patricia hosts a 3 day mentoring event in Shelby where thousands of teens from the area come to hear speakers, and participate in workshops.
